Even if you must speak on your cell phone while driving, it is important to keep the conversation to a minimum. For all that some people will argue that they can easily keep their eyes and their mind on the road while talking on the telephone, the simple fact of the matter – and this is scientifically proven – is that attempting to concentrate on two things at once will impair your concentration in both cases. It may not matter if your full attention is not devoted to the telephone call, but a sudden stop in the traffic ahead of you will make it absolutely essential that you are 100% concentrated on the road. If you want to carry on a conversation that last longer than the minimum period, find somewhere to pull over where you can park the car and sit to chat before finishing the conversation and driving off. 

It is important to be aware of the rules where you live. Some states have state-wide laws on this issue, and some allow the localities – county or city – to decide their own regulations and enforcement practices. One way or the other, it is much better for you and other road users if you have a hands-free kit for those times when you absolutely, positively have to have the conversation that is imminent. Remember, though, that it is only in cases where the conversation is essential, and only for as long as you cannot find somewhere to stop.
